I loved it. I can hear all the hate already.
No, I loved it because for the first time in my very young life, I was seeing a black woman who thinks she’s awesome — even if she kinda doesn’t and its all a facade because she wants to be the ‘cool girl’. Was it the best movie I’ve ever seen? No. I don’t feel like any of the characters were developed well enough and the idea that you have to be the Black Sheep of a black family to be awesome and not a stereotypical ‘black girl’ but a trendy hipster, didn’t really resonate with me. But I’m a pioneer of the thought, we can always complain about things to the point that something positive or progressive, is almost immediately deemed lacking or not good enough. Jessica Williams is awesome, Chris O’Dowd is a cool dude with an awesome accent. I just think that within all our criticism as valid as it is, we can appreciate the elements of it that were good.
