Killer Tips for Your Blog Post Layout

You know what they say: You eat the food first with your eyes, then with the mouth. That means that you enjoy seeing the food ordered and nicely decorated in your plate before you swallow it. Well, it’s the same for your readers.

When they come to your blog they want to be greeted by a pleasant atmosphere and a breathtaking design that will make it easy for them to find their way around. Then, you may as well give them that by crafting the perfect blog post layout. Not to mention that you’ll make the other blogs so jealous.

Okay, now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s jump to the most important part. The tips and ways to turn your dream layout into a reality. And guess what? I have just the ones you need. So, let’s get going!

Vertical is the new trend

We’ll begin with the whole alignment of your blog posts. Make sure it’s vertical and the text and images are in perfect sync. Lots of blogs ignore this detail and end up with a bunch of disappointed readers. Just imagine when they come to your blog and see words or pictures sticking out from the rest of the column. Definitely not cool. That’s why it has become a trend of some sort to keep things vertical and lined up.

For instance, try to make your paragraphs and images the same width so that they are aligned together. Believe me, they look right when they fit perfectly into the columns.

Typewriters are in again

Bring your old typewriter out and learn something from it. You surely ask yourself, what that old machine could possibly teach you about blog post layouts, but I must tell you that the answer is ‘plenty’. Yes. The lesson lies in fonts. The fewer they are, the better your layout will look like. As we all know, the typewriters have only one font and that tells us something, right? Success lies in the simplicity.

Moreover, a great combination would be to use three fonts on your blog — one for the titles of the posts, one for the text in the posts’ body and the last one for the sidebar titles. Keep that in mind when crafting your layout.

As white as snow

Close your eyes and rewind back to the winter days when snow was falling all day long, covering the ground with its whiteness. Oh, how peaceful and tranquil you felt, huh? Now back we go to our reality where you’ll try to create that peace for your readers, too. As the main ally in this intention, use the white space.

If your posts are stuffed with text and the letters are glued close to another, it will seem claustrophobic and too crowded for regular readers to go through. No. They don’t like that, so don’t do it. Instead, find a way to leave white spaces around. For instance, it can be the post’s background, leaving bigger spaces between the text, separating the images and stuff like that. Just remember that whiteness is what’ll make your blog truly special.

Organize your words like clothes

The same as your clothes are organized in piles and neatly folded in your wardrobe, your writing should be separated into paragraphs or bullet points. Why? For the simple reason, that people find it easier to read when they have all your ideas separated for them. It’s a fact that nowadays most of the users skim through your content, so if your post doesn’t have paragraphs, they’ll quickly lose their interest.

For example, a post about dessert recipes on a food blog would have the following structure — bullet points about the needed ingredients, subheadings, and paragraphs containing every step of the cooking process separately. Only that way we can speak of a successful post layout.

Be bold

When you read something, you must admit that it looks rather plain without the adjustments such as bolded parts or words in italic and underlined phrases. All of those are what makes the experience easier and more pleasant. Not to mention that by bolding certain parts of the writing, you highlight their importance and grab the users’ attention.

To illustrate, let’s say you run a fashion blog and you write a post about the fashion on the runways. For a maximum engagement with the readers, you can bold phrases like ‘flower dresses’, ‘red high-heels’, ‘wooden ties’, ‘crimson suits’, ‘affordable prices’, ‘summer’ and so on. That way, the users will get an idea of the most important parts without having to read the whole post. Cool, right?

Explain visually

Visual elements are as vital for your blog post layout as the writing. They offer you a unique chance to show the users what you actually mean to say with your words. For example, if you write a post about desserts, you can include images of them and the ingredients so that people can get an idea of what they look like or in a post about fashion trends you may as well include the clothes that are trendy so that the users can see them. I think you get my point.

Moreover, you have to take care about the images you choose. Pick ones that are more realistic and depict the base of your words. You don’t want to put photos of hunters on a post about protecting the endangered animals, right? You can find some amazing images by checking out my post — Where Do I Get Images for My Blog?

Besides the images, you can enrich your blog post layout with graphs, infographics, gifs or videos to make the experience of your readers even more interesting and useful. Look at it this way. If you write about the change in the taste of clothes of young people, putting a graph with statistical data that proves your statement will make your words more believable and accurate for the readers. Now that’s the right thing to do, is it not?

Wow! It seems that crafting the perfect blog post layout is not such an easy job to do. But with all of these killer tips it gets close to it. Maybe you need to invest a few more minutes of your time and a bunch of sweat drops on your forehead to see the success unravel before your eyes, but it’s totally worth it. There’s nothing like seeing your magnificent, concise, all-in-its-place layout for the first time and expecting to see the wave of traffic coming to enjoy it with you.
