Surf Sand and SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga)
It’s 6:45 p.m. at night, and I’m in awe of how beautiful the Fort Point Channel looks. As I make my way from the Harborwalk to the Fort Point Pier, it’s impossible to not take in the wonder all around me. The sun is slowly setting, its rays beaming lazily off the glass windows of buildings. The warm summer breeze brushes past my skin as I watch the channel lazily ebb and flow. This beauty is almost enough to distract me from taking my first-ever stand up paddleboard yoga class. Tonight’s class is organized by the lovely people over at SUP YO, who offer classes in various locations in the state.
I have had previous experience with paddleboarding, but comparatively little with yoga. As far as poses go, I only knew the Downward Facing Dog. But I steeled my nerves as I neared the pier, and pushed toxic thoughts of falling into the channel waters to the back of my mind. Upon arriving, I was greeted warmly by my instructor Kelley. She kindly took into consideration my novice status at yoga. Throughout the class she helpfully demonstrated how to properly get into each pose. As the class went on, I gradually became more comfortable with standing and moving about on the paddleboard. My fear of falling disappeared as quickly as it came. I was able to relax and enter a state of calmness even though the hustle and bustle of city life was only a few minutes away. From the yoga to the my surroundings, everything felt wonderfully calm and relaxing.
I highly recommend everyone to try stand up paddleboard yoga with SUP YO. Whether you’re a self-proclaimed paddleboard yoga expert or completely new to it all, it’s truly an amazing way to get out on the water during the summertime. The instructors are attentive and helpful from from the start to the end of the class. Enjoy the waters of the Fort Point Channel and get your fitness on- truly a veritable highlight to anyone’s summer!
A huge shout out and thank you goes to SUP YO for letting me participate in the class. It was an experience that I will never forget. I’ve told all my friends about it, and can’t wait to attend the next class. Another thank you goes to my instructor Kelley for helping me in my first ever class and making it an all around fantastic experience. All in all, I can’t wait to get back on the waters of the channel to do some stand up paddleboard yoga!
