Wilderness in the Suburbs (SOL #2)
I thought to myself, “Man, where are they coming from?” As I turned into my driveway, a regal red fox sashayed along the sidewalk directly in front of the my front bumper. What? More wildlife? Just the day before, eight deer crossed my path on my way home. Who would have thought that so many creatures lived in my land locked bedroom community of 30,000+ people.
These two adjacent wildlife sightings reminded me of other sightings over the years. There was the “dog,” later to be identified as an opossum that visited our patio. For a summer, there was the family of skunks, affectionately named Pepe Le Pue and the Pepettes, living under our shed. And, one hot summer afternoon a brawny badger commando crawled across the backyard.
Although I truly enjoy the cultural advantages of living in a booming metropolis, I am grateful that my piece of suburbia has flora and fauna abound.
