The famous Victor Noir’s tomb is in the Père Lachaise cemetery, one of the largest cemeteries in Paris.

That is also the eternal resting place of important and famous people in history, such as Jim Morrison, Frederic Chopin, Oscar Wilde, and Molière, to name a few.

Although, the reasons why the tomb of this man is so crowded and famous have little to do with his life and work.

Who was Victor Noir?

In the mid-19th century, Victor Noir contributed to the French newspaper La Marseillaise, founded by Henri Rochefort.

In 1870, the newspaper’s editor, Paschal Grousset, became involved in a quarrel with Prince Pierre Bonaparte, cousin of the then Emperor Napoleon III.

It all started with the publication of an article criticizing the prince’s great-uncle, Napoleon Bonaparte himself.

The problem escalated so much that Pierre challenged Grousset to a duel.

Like any honorable gentleman of the time, the publisher accepted the duel and asked his godfathers (including Victor Noir) to arrange a time and place to settle scores.
