Introspecting my months with Finomena as Product Designer

Q1. Things I’ve worked on or contributed to so far ?

“You are happiest while you are making the great contribution.”

Yes, I am happy working at Finomena. Following are my contributions as a Product Designer.

  1. Managed to give Finomena a face.

2. Actively took part in taking small decisions in App/Website flows with founders.

Q2. Things I’ve done well and count as an achievement for myself ?

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

Coming from freelancing background, I always wanted to work on something from scratch and watch it evolve and constantly be in touch with users so that I can make something which is always in balance of user goals & company goals.

A product is not a sum of few screens. It’s about taking constant decisions about what behaviour will it add on, what will user perceive. Are users getting value out of it. And in this whole decision, every team member is involved, whether it’s tech, customer support or growth. We all, collaboratively shape the product day in & out.

Bridging a gap between these people is difficult. Everybody speaks different language. Some speak in C++, some in Mixpanel, I speak in pixels sometimes. Communicating & working together needs a common language & its quite difficult. Everybody works on their timeline since everybody’s time is important. In this scenario when you have one person that makes environment lighter, then everybody tends to like that person. Now I am known as DJ Rads in the house. Now people share their stories, their frustrations, their aspirations with me. Building this level of trust with massive number of people at professional & personal level is something I achieved in these two months.

Q3. Things I haven’t done well so far and would like to improve at ?

“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”

Working with fast growing startup gives you immense possibilities of learning new things, implementing new ideas. Being as ENFP personality type, it all looks relative to me. For me nothing is right or wrong. I am learning new tools, reading new user research theories, browsing through new interactions, I just feel that due to time constraints I am not able to shape my ideas correctly. Like for instance if I am thinking of some interaction such as animated stuff/ gifs, I’m unable to ship them. I think static screens are outdated, everything should be moving.

Q4. Things I’ve loved ? (in terms of work done, or anything else about the company, people, anything)

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

Space : I am writing this while sitting on a bunk bed in a beautiful penthouse in Bangalore. This is a temporary accommodation until we shift to the famous posh location in Koramangala (Considered to be hub of startups). Founders make sure that basic necessities are met so that we can work on the highest level of pyramid of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs ie Self actualization.

People: Amazing company environment, with high energy passionate people that keeps you motivated.

Q5. My self-assessment of how productive I have been ?

I do professional communications via email only. Due to only one channel, my productivity automatically increases. I don’t use whatsapp as I am using essential phone. By doing this, I focus on only important & urgent stuff and do complete work on time most of the times. In free time I help Growth Team by giving tips and tricks on canva.

Q6. How is Finomena different from other workplaces ? Any suggestions to make it even better?

F for Fast. With love for Jeff / Ola culture & believe in long tail concept, Finomena is the fastest startup I have ever worked with.

I for Innovative. Yes, we do think differently & do discard unimportant things whenever necessary. We constantly thrive for upgradations depending on Feedbacks.

N for Natural’s Ice cream lover. Why I chose this definition for N because we do try to take out few minutes to get together & cherish sweet moments. We try to preserve our ‘child’ ( C in PAC transactional analysis) which is main source of creativity & newness. We go out, play games, laugh, learn from each other.

Q7. What new things/concepts/ways-of-working have I learnt here?

Some phrases I learnt here.

Don’t drop the ball.

Trust team members like anything.

Ruthless prioritising.

Communicate when in doubt.

Overcommunicate.

Don’t over engineering.

Retain good employees.

Try to be functional first.

Try to disrupt & come up with new products constantly.

Work on ETAs.Don’t block other team members.

Don’t settle for local maxima.
