A Short Bio of Draupadi Murmu — 2022 Indian Presidential Candidate
Draupadi Murmu, now among the popular political personality in India, was born on June 20, 1958, in Baidaposi village of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha. She belongs to the Santhal Tribal community & her paternal family was the head of the tribe under the Panchayati Raj System.
From a very early age, she has been motivated to study & aspired to contribute to the improvement of tribal people & women. Talking about her basic education, Draupadi Murmu did her schooling at K.B. HS Uparbeda School, Mayurbhanj, and then she went to Bhubneshwar for her further studies. Smt. Draupadi completed her graduation from the Rama Devi Woman’s College.
Draupadi Murmu got married to Shyam Charan Murmu, a Bank Officer. In their wedlock, they had three children: two sons & a daughter. She was leading her political & personal career happily. But, fate had some other destination. She has faced such kinds of tragedies from which one can hardly come out. In 2009, she lost one of her sons in an accident, which plunged her into a depression.
She was recovering from the depression, but the god had another plan. In 2014, she lost her husband, followed by the death of another son. Draupadi Murmu lost her entire family, except a daughter, Itishri Murmu.
Draupadi Murmu Journey to Political Career
The journey of Smt. Draupadi Murmu’s political career is full of ups & downs. Before coming to the political career, she was working as an Assistant professor in Rajgangpur & living peacefully with her husband & sons. The inclination for politics came when she joined the BJP party. In 1997, she contested the election for councilor from Rairangpur and swept the seat with exceptional votes.
From that very impressive stint in political life, she never looked back on her political life. She has achieved numerous milestones in her way of a political career, including two times MLA, Minister of State, vice president of the Scheduled Tribes Morcha of the BJP party, governor of Jharkhand, and so on.
Recently, Smt. Draupadi has made a significant leap in her political career. She has been chosen as a candidate for the 2022 Indian Presidential election. It is being reported that Smt. Murmu has the upper hand in this presidential election, and most probably, she might be the 15th President of India.
Smt. Draupadi Murmu is an inspiration not only for the tribal woman but for all Indian citizens. Despite encountering various hardships & struggle in her societal life, she now stands politically strong to hold the most prestigious position, President of India. SMT. Draupadi Murmu’s Achievements in Political Career
(a) She entered politics by joining the Bhartiya Janata Party. In 1997, she contested for councilor from Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat & won that very election. In the same year, she also became Rairangpur’s Vice-Chairperson.
(b) After serving her tenure as a Vice-President of BJP’s Scheduled Tribes Morcha, she entered into constituency election. In the year 2000, Smt. Murmu was elected as a legislator from the Rairangpur constituency.
© For the unversed, she even held the ministerial position during the BJD and BJP coalition government in Odisha. Talking about the same, Smt. Draupadi Murmu served as a minister in Commerce & Transport from March 6, 2000, to August 6, 2002. Subsequently August 6, 2002, to May 16, 2004, she served as minister of the Fisheries & Animal Resources Department.
(d) In 2004, she was again elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Rairangpur constituency.
(e) Also, she served as the State President of the BJP’s ST Morcha and the District President of the BJP in Mayurbhanj from 2006 to 2009.
(f) Draupadi Murmu, now considered a prominent political figure, was honored with Nilakantha Award for being the best MLA of 2007 by the Legislative Assembly of Odisha.
(g) In 2015, she was sworn in for the gubernatorial position & served as the first woman Governor of Jharkhand from May 18, 2015, to July 12, 2021. She was the first governor who completed a 5-years tenure in Jharkhand.
(g) Smt. Draupadi Ji was also selected as a candidate for the 2017 Indian Presidential election. But, unfortunately, she could not win. In the 2017 Presidential Election, Ram Nath Kovind won & currently serving as President of India.
(h) If elected, Draupadi Murmu will be the first tribal President of India and the country’s second female President.
