I think the idea behind the applause is a pretty good one. From the email we all received about this change, it was done with the intent of letting publishers know how much you liked it. Makes sense to me. As a publisher, knowing how much someone likes your work is pretty cool to know.

As a reader, the number of hearts told me about the quality of the article. I would read it because so many people liked it/recommended it. Now, that’s what I miss with applause. As I write, I see this post has 8.4K applauses. But I have no idea from how many people. Did 10 people applaud ? Did 8.4K people applaud? I have no idea and this is quite irritating to me as a reader. I miss my heart then and I am not going to be okay with the applause.

Medium, please start showing the number of people who applauded, in addition to the number of applauses. This move, IMO, would then be applauded.
