One of the most common questions that come in the mind of IELTS test takers is that whether they have to attempt the test with pen or pencil? Let us discuss the answer for this most frequently asked question.

For IELTS Writing

In IELTS writing module, you can use a pen or a pencil or both. It all depends upon your choice. There is no specific differentiation in the marking criteria for the tasks attempted with pen or pencil. Both tasks, whether it is TASK 1 or TASK 2 can be written in pen or pencil. However, it is advisable to use pencil to avoid cutting. If you have opted for IELTS Exam Coaching, try sticking to one type, pencil or pen, so that you get habitual of its use. If you are using pencil, pencil should be dark so that it is easy for examiner to read. Also, if you erase any word make sure it has been erased properly and is not visible through new word. Whereas, if you use pen and want to delete any word, it should not be cut with a single line rather many lines should be used to indicate the examiner that the word has been deleted. Moreover, if you want to add any word, use ^ sign. Furthermore, we at Welkin Edusolutions Chandigarh can guide you more regarding the tips for excelling in writing.

For IELTS Listening and Reading

Unlike writing module, in IELTS Listening and Reading module all of your answers must be written in pencil. It is essential that you do not use a pen. There is no option for writing yours answers in pen so better use pencil even in your IELTS exam coaching sessions.

Does handwriting affects the score?

Handwriting does not directly impact your score; however, it cannot be denied that it might influence your score if it is not clearly understandable for the examiner. In writing module, your handwriting will affect your score only if it is not legible for the examiner. If the examiner would be able to read what you have written, then definitely it will affect your score.

For the reading and listening tests, answers are either correct or incorrect. Handwriting is not of utmost importance in these two modules. However, your answers should be easily understandable hence you should write these in capital letters.
