I’m laughing a bit at the idea that “real jobs” are based solely on merit and interview skills. I would say those are necessary components, but personal connections and professional networks still play as big if not bigger role in my experience. I can only speak for my company (>10,000 employees), but more than 50% of all new hires come from an internal recommendation.
