“Down with pointlessly long hours!”

In the example you laid out, I think we can all agree that those are necessary, not pointless, hours. I think Ester’s point was that there are often instances where employees are putting in long hours that aren’t necessary, but more for the point of trying to look dedicated/hard-working (i.e., come in before the boss does every morning/stay after boss leaves but not actually getting anything done during that time).

My biggest rant against long hours is the quality of work produced during 14+ hour days is significantly poorer after a normal 9 hour day.
