I think safe is a very personal thing. The specific things that trigger me may not trigger you, and your triggers may not trigger me. But I believe from reading this piece that the writer wants to be part of the solution and not the problem. He wants to express the truth of his experiences when he was a young white person growing up and learning to recognize and eventually counter the racist ideas he came in contact with.

Considering your feelings, I’m not sure it’s important that you read his piece, but if you do, I’d be interested in hearing what you think about it.
