The Importance Of Community

We, humans, are intensely social and as we have evolved our makeup has become geared towards 3 C’s: Connecting, caring and co-operating. These are the foundations of any and all communities and we naturally form them in all aspects of our lives, so why are they important?

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” Henry Ford

Don’t be a grumpy goat

Studies have shown that those whose daily routines include high-quality social connections, contributing to the greater good and the sense of belonging have an increased tendency to happiness.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill

What’s the point in keeping it to yourself?

There are many reasons why people are reluctant to share knowledge be them selfish, ignorant or innocent but in order to progress as individuals, communities and a species we cannot keep valuable knowledge to ourselves. In the same way that a problem shared is a problem halved, knowledge shared is knowledge gained.

“In vain have you acquired knowledge if you have not imparted it to others.” Deuteronomy Rabbah

It’s always better when we’re together

Wisely sung by Jack Johnson. Communities promote a sense of belonging that is vital for our survival. Humans across cultures have sought after the acceptance of others, it is primal and fundamental to our sense of happiness and well-being.

“I know there is strength in the differences between us. I know there is comfort, where we overlap.” ― Ani DiFranco

The more the merrier

Being part of a group of people, be it your small friendship group or an international industry community, is fun and stimulating. Interacting with each other, sharing experiences, developing valued relationships and working toward a common goal will make you feel more fulfilled and contented. Without communities, our lives would be isolated and lacking the support needed to combat the daily stress, struggles and chaos of modern life. Getting to know new people is essential to the enrichment of a person’s life, so get out there.

“Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together.” Paul Ryan
