First Tutorial

In the first tutorial we, as a group, made a mind map of all the job options that we were collectively aware of prior to any symposiums or seminars. See above picture.

The main areas of interest for me personally were working within a gallery or within the film industry, working with other people’s photography rather than my own. More specifically, though, I am most interested in finding out about Curating, as setting up exhibition pieces and the set construction project in second year is what I have enjoyed most during my time at University. Not only this, but it is something I feel I have excelled at. I also enjoy the researching aspect of the course which ties in nicely with both curating and my other area of interest, Location Scouting for films.

As I don’t expect to jump into either of these career paths without experience, the right opportunities or perhaps further education, I have looked into some temporary work around my home for the summer to keep myself engaged within photography whilst I pursue these other potential career paths. After this module I hope to have narrowed down my job options to just one direction to help me focus on what I actually want to do within the industry.

Spidge is a local photography company who specialise in mainly horse shows around my area. They have photographed many of my own shows and I have been offered a chance to work with them in the past, prior to my decision to come to university. This would be a good temporary option to keep me engaged with photographic practice, have a steady pay check and will allow me to use up to date photography software (as images are edited on sight), while I further investigate potential careers in whichever path I decide upon.

Unfortunately, from my basic research into my area there is very limited work within the photographic industry unless I want to commute to London. Although I am not opposed to this for the future, I want to spend the summer at home before graduation. I will further my research into job opportunities within my surrounding areas that preferably are more to do with working in galleries and with other people’s photography, however at this point I’m not ruling anything out.
