Two More Curatorial Case Studies

Pontus Hulten was a Swedish curator who played a huge role in the transformation of the job in the nineteenth century. He worked at establishments such as Moderna Museet and Centre Pompidou where he pushed the boundaries of the traditional curatorial style into what we know today. In particular he fought to break down the barriers between visual arts, music, literature, science, and life working with multiple mediums in one show.

Simon Baker is the first curator of photography at the Tate Modern in London. His most recent completed show, Conflict, Time, Photography ended in the March of 2015. I chose Baker as one of my case studies not only because he is one of the most well known British curators but also because he has a certain traditionalism in the way he structures his exhibitions. Saying that it is also paired with a uniqueness and in my opinion he gets the balance just right between tradition and creating a new experience.

The exhibition is centred around the work of war photographers such as Don McCullin and Richard Peter. I think what drew me to this exhibition was the representation of the imagery on the walls. There is a regimented chaos to the layout (if there is such a thing) mimicking the contrast between military structure and the unpredictable carnage of war. The perfectly set images scattered across the wall as seen in the picture above is an example of what I am trying to coney. This incorporation of the theme of the exhibition in the very hanging of the art is what I really admire about Bakers curatorial style.
