My Travel Bucket List — 13 Amazing Places

I can only describe travelling as my drug. The more travelling I do, the more I need. I’ve visited 18 countries and I’ve lived in 4 of them but I still feel like this is no where near enough. When I think about how many amazing places there are that I want to visit I actually start to panic that I don’t have enough time. If you’ve ever watched the series Two and a Half Men, there’s a scene where Alan has a breakdown in the middle of a bookstore when he realises he doesn’t have enough time to read all the books … this is how I feel when I’m reading travel blogs!

So, I decided, in order to help me organise my future trips better, I had to write down my very own bucket list of amazing places that I absolutely must visit.

And here they are …

The 13 Amazing Places on my travel bucket list

1. Bali

The first place on my travel bucket list is Bali. Ever since I read Eat Pray Love I have been dreaming of spending a month meditating and relaxing in the beautiful and peaceful Balinese surroundings. The photo above is taken from the Viceroy Bali, a luxurious 5 star family owned resort, located in Bali’s ‘Valley of the Kings’. The resort has 25 private luxury apartments and the one pictured above is the one I hope to stay in one day! It’s way out of my reach now but this is the dream and I believe if I work hard enough I will get there!

2. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Angkor Wat in Cambodia was built in the 12th century and is the largest religious monument in the world. It is protected as a UNESCO world heritage site and is visited by over 2 million tourists per year which most likely means that Angkor Wat is on a lot of people’s bucket lists!

3. Lapland

If I had to choose just one place from my bucket list of amazing places then I think it would have to be Lapland. Not just because I want to sleep in a glass igloo, or because I want to meet Father Christmas, no, the main reason is that I want more than anything to see the Northern Lights. You can sleep in one of these incredible glass igloos at KAKSLAUTTANEN ARCTIC RESORT in Lapland, and if you visit between the end of August and the end of April, you have a very high chance of seeing one of the most spectacular natural sights on earth, the Aurora Borealis. The resort also offers ice igloos and cosy wooden cabins and you get to hang out with huskies! This is a seriously cool place!

4. The Pyramids at Giza, Egypt

I’ve always been interested in history and knowing that these Pyramids are the only remaining wonder from the original Seven Wonders of the World makes me even more eager to see them up close. My plan would be to spend a day or two visiting Cairo with a few hours set aside to explore the pyramids and take a thousand photographs!

5. The Great Wall of China

There’s a lot of places in China that I’d like to explore but the Great Wall of China is definitely top of my list. This incredible wall running from the east to west of the northern border of China has been calculated to be over 21,000 kms (over 13,000 miles) in total! Not to mention, the views look incredible!

6. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

I dream of dancing Samba at the Brazillian Carnival in Rio de Janeiro! I would also love to visit Ipanema Beach, the place made famous by the 1960’s song, The Girl from Ipanema which will always be one of my favourites!

7. Toronto and Niagara Falls, Canada

Most people think of the USA when they think about a visit to Niagara Falls however, I would love to plan my visit in Canada. Just an hour and a half from Toronto and you are at the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, this is where the largest of the 3 falls, Horseshoe Falls, is located. A boat cruise from here takes you on a tour of all 3 of the falls and promises a memorable and exciting experience as you get as close as possible to the roaring water falls! They even offer night cruises with lights and fireworks which sounds incredible. I intend to take both the day and night cruise to get the full experience!

8. Cinque Terre, Italy

I think the photo of this place says enough about why I want to visit Cinque Terre. This beautiful cluster of 5 villages built in the cliffs is one of the most picturesque places I’ve ever seen. This part of the Italian Riveria has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and no cars are allowed. Here I want to sip red wine, enjoy good Italian food and take romantic evening walks.

9. Glowworm Caves, New Zealand

There are many reasons that I’d like to visit New Zealand and I also plan to combine this visit with a trip to Australia. Ideally I would spend at least a month exploring both countries. However, there’s one very special place that I’d love to see in New Zealand and that’s the glowworm caves. You can take a magical boat ride through the caves which are lit by thousands of this incredible little creatures. I love visiting caves but I’ve never seen a cave lit up by glowworms and this is definitely something I need to tick off my bucket list!

10. Hotel of Ice, Romania

There’s quite a few amazing ice hotels around the world but I’ve chosen the Ice Hotel in Romania as I’d like to take a road trip from Bulgaria. I will combine it with a visit to Bran Castle which is around a 2 drive from the hotel and a stopover in Bucharest. I’m sure that I could only manage one night in an icy bedroom but the experience looks incredible and it’s definitely something that I would like to try once. Who knows, if I enjoy it I may even make a list of ice hotels that I’d like to visit around the world too!

11. Dubrovnik, Croatia

I’ve heard good things about Croatia from everyone who’s visited. Usually the words used to describe it are, beautiful, peaceful, affordable and charming. Dubrovnik is also listed as UNESCO world heritage city as the old town is a well-preserved example of a late-medieval walled city.

12. New York

I think, like many women, I got the New York bug after watching countless episodes of Sex and the City. I want to go to New York to enjoy some fine dining, drink cocktails every evening and, most importantly, shop! I admit I am a shopaholic and I’m not even ashamed! When I have the means I will shop for days on end in New York City and it will be pure heaven!

13. Havana, Cuba

Cuba has been on my wish list for a long time. While I was living in the Dominican Republic I was really hoping I’d get the opportunity to visit as I was so close, but sadly not. I can just imagine being in Havana, smoking a Cuban cigar, drinking rum and dancing Salsa … in the meantime I’ll just have to keep visiting my local favourite Cuban bar!

So that’s it, 13 amazing places that I have to visit. You may wonder why I chose 13 places … Well, the list was supposed to be 10 amazing places to begin with but I just couldn’t narrow it down! I was down to these 13 and I decided I will stick with them, after all, I was born on the 13th so it must be a lucky number for me!
