Facebook vs. Twitter: Which Is Better For Business

It’s great when you have enough time to stay very active on both Facebook and Twitter, but many of us don’t.

That’s ok. It’s much better to be a rockstar on one platform than to be mediocre on every single platform out there.

But how do you decide which network is the most worthy of your time and energy?

Start by asking yourself these questions:

  • Who are you targeting?
  • What social media platforms do your ideal customers use the most?
  • What kind of content and information do you need to create and share on the platform to attract your target market?
  • Are there tools available to manage the social media account easier?
  • Which social media platforms will give you the best return on your business investment? (i.e. leads, engagement, new customers)
  • How will you use the social media network to foster relationships with new followers?

Sure, you can also look at the numbers:

Facebook has 1.79 billion monthly active users, while Twitter has 317 million.

However, using a social network based solely on numbers isn’t your best bet. You need to know how these 2 networks are being used and by whom.

Here’s a brief overview and some stats:

Facebook:

  • 41% of U.S. small businesses use Facebook
  • More than 1.09 billion people log onto Facebook daily
  • 76% of all females and 66% of all males are on FB

Facebook is essentially the “Watercooler” and hang out spot where you can get connected, chat it up with your fans and followers.

Facebook is a good fit for your startup if you want to create forums or easy-to-follow discussions. It’s also great for nurturing new and existing relationships.

Twitter:

  • Percentage wise, 25- to 34-year-olds are more into Twitter than teens.
  • 63% of Twitter users regard their smartphones as their primary tweeting device.
  • 61% of Twitter users follow small businesses to interact with them and share ideas and feedback.

Twitter is the “newsroom” and a place to collaborate, connect with influencers and keep up with what’s happening and trending.

Twitter is a good fit for your startup if you want to focus on sharing resourceful information with your followers, collaborating with others and connecting with influencers.
