5 reasons why I became a Start-up intern…

It was coming to the last couple of weeks of summer before my second year at university. Hoorayyy. It was then I received an email from my university stating that a company was looking for a marketing intern. Great I thought, me a marketing intern perfect for a marketing student.

So whilst I pondered the next couple of days, enjoying lounging my hours away, I thought let’s send a cover letter and CV. Before I did that though, I had to obviously research the company, take in their values, missions, goals and all of that.

However, I came to a dead end. No company came up, no website, no logo, nothing, nada! I stopped and questioned myself, why would the university send out an email stating this company was looking for an intern, if this company didn’t exist. Was this a scam?

Then it hit me, they must be a start-up company on the verge off trying to launch. Nonetheless, with no reluctance I wrote my cover letter, updated my CV and pressed the send button. Not too long after, I got a reply stating that they would review my application and the next stage would be a telephone interview.

I thought, great even if I don’t get it, at least I tried, after all I could have just decided not to apply and carry on doing nothing for the coming weeks, instead of getting some real valuable experience.

Fast-forward to the next morning, I checked my emails, and they said “lets skip the telephone interview, and we would like to invite you for an actual interview today or tomorrow”.

WOW! I was amazed, so I set my interview for the next day, and even though there wasn’t much research I could do, that didn’t put me off. Two days later after my interview, I was sat in the office once again, this time as a marketing intern for RecruitSumo.

Here are some reasons that I like working for a start-up:

  1. REAL Responsibility:

Time is paramount with any start-up, everyone is busy so as an intern you’re actually getting stuck in and doing your own projects that plays a part in the business. I was nervous the first time when I had full control of social media management.

It’is different, everything you post or when you click ‘like’ is a representation of the business. Now I feel comfortable having that responsibility. The fact you are able to do such massive tasks for the company shows the trust and accountability you have.

You wouldn’t be able to have the same opportunity in a bigger company. This gives you so much more confidence but is also a great learning experience to a take on new tasks and feel like a real member of the team.

2) The passion for the job:

Working at start-up you not only hear but see the passion that the other people have for working for the business. Those who venture out and set-up their own business have a different outlook, which is great way to hear what motivated them and inspires them.

It gives you a different perspective to the world of business and the perseverance it takes. Being a part of a start-up is a great way to see how the business works as a whole.

Unlike a larger organisation your exposure is restricted to one area, whereas at a start-up you get see what everyone else is up too, especially at weekly meetings and what’s being accomplished.

You are also made to feel a part of the team with the chance of actually knowing everyone involved with the business. Ultimately, it is great way to start networking and building contacts with others.

3) The environment:

Another perk of working at a start-up like Recruitsumo is the laid-back setting. Even though you are working, the relaxed atmosphere is pleasant. You also have the freedom to wear casual clothing and not be restricted to a dress code. After all, as long as the work is done that should be the priority.

 4) Location, Location, Location

Another great aspect of working at Recruitsumo is the location, with just around 2 miles out from the city centre of Birmingham, it’s nice to be away from the populated environment and noise of the city and be surrounded by a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere of the campus around, perfect for a break and time to think.

5) Developing skills and knowledge further

Its a great way to turn theory into practice and having responsibility early on, is fantastic. I’ve found it gives you the opportunity to understand how things work in real life, with real people, using real tools and getting real results. As an intern you have the chance to learn more and increase your knowledge in the field you work in.
