Own the Day, Own Your Life: A Simple Morning Routine to Make Everyday Your Best Day Ever

Aubrey Marcus wrote a fantastic book titled, Own the Day, Own Your Life. In that, he describes an array of productivity, nutrition, and mindset practices you can use to make your days and ultimately life progressively better.

However, what he forgets to mention is that if you simply wake up each morning and put first things first, then you're well and truly on the right track.

As Benjamin P. Hardy once wrote,

“How you start something is generally how you finish it. If you start right, you’ll usually be able to stay right. But if you start wrong, it’s very, very difficult to get things right.”

Indeed, Alex Charfen has similarly said that we are momentum-based beings. Everything in life is following your behavior. When you wake up and do what you intrinsically know you should do, the rest becomes so much easier.

Because you’d seen yourself do the right thing once, it becomes increasingly easier to do the right thing. Thus, momentum begins to build, and your days become progressively better.

As the quality of your days gets better, so will the quality of your months, years, and ultimately life.

The remainder of this article comprises of a few questions I was asked surrounding my morning routine for an article that never got published.

I hope you find something that helps:

What Time Do You Wake up in the Morning?

I wake up at 5:15am with an alarm — not by constraint, but by choice. I generally find that the morning hours are the best time to get stuff done.

Once You’re up, What Is the First Thing You Do in the Morning?

I drink a large glass of water before writing my goals and dreams down within the pages of my journal. That takes about 10–15 minutes but completely orientates my day and life in the direction I intend to go. Finally, I spend about 90–120 minutes reading and writing. By 7:30am, the most important work of my day has already been done.

Do You Eat Breakfast?

Robert Brault has famously said, “One key to success is to have lunch at the time of day most people have breakfast.” That’s also a principle I live by. After writing and showering, I usually have a big meal of chicken and rice, a protein shake, and some oats.

How Long Did Your Morning Routine Take to Implement?

When you make a definitive decision, you never have to think about it again. When I was still at university, I would get up at 3am, and that just happened naturally. Same with what I do now. Generally, I only make exceptions when I’m outside of my routine environment.

What Advice Do You Have for People Who Struggle to Stick to Their Morning Routine?

When the demand is great, the supply will follow. Similarly, Bill Walsh has said, “If your WHY is strong enough you will figure out HOW!” When you really have a compelling reason to do a morning routine, it will not be hard. Instead, it will be easy.

However, I do have some other practical tips:

  • Plan your day and lay everything out for the morning the night before.
  • Put your phone on airplane mode and place your alarm away from your bed.

The idea is that you don’t want to decide how your day will go in the morning. Instead, you want to decide the night before and then simply live it in the morning.
