From the field:

Lesvos

Right now, there is a demonstration on the Greek island of Lesvos as part as an ongoing series of human rights initiatives to push back against the inhumane conditions and treatment of refugees in Moria camp by the Greek authorities.

Arash Hampay, who is involved in some of these activities, gives his update on why people from the Afghani community refuse to return to Moria camp.

“Today in Mytilene, Greece, refugees demonstrated. There is no need to explain, since the pictures and slogans speak for themselves. People do not want to go back to Moria camp. They are tired of spending their lives in camps being stressed about their uncertain future and worried about being deported to their war torn countries.”

In fact, here in Lesvos, in broad daylight, a violation of the 1951 Refugee Convention is taking place. The laws are not violated by the refugees but by the UNHCR and by the Police, without any accountability on their part.

Who is going to prevent this except us, the people themselves?”

The RefuComm Team support them in their efforts to get awareness to their situation and hope that Europe is listening.

From across the web:

Germany

It has been reported that Angela Merkel is absolutely steadfast in her resolve that the decision she took in 2015, to open the borders, was right, and once again urges other European governments to accept a fair distribution of refugees to their countries. Read more here.

France

Did you ever imagine that you would see the return of a skin disorder that belongs in the trenches of the first and second world war in modern times? No neither did we! A growing numbers of children and adults are being diagnosed with the condition, with new cases emerging every day and the severity reaching levels worse than they have ever seen.. See here

World

A new book Refuge: Rethinking Refugee Policy in a Changing World, argues that the refugee crisis is the result NOT of numbers, but of policy. Read more here.

“The problem, according to Collier and Betts, is that the international community is focused solely on rescue. Rescue is certainly important; refugees need to escape from immediate peril and violence. But once they are relatively safe, refugees, like all humans, also need autonomy. People need the chance to provide for themselves and their children, and to live meaningful lives.”

…and in other news…

Adam, who we usually see in his pants, has given up his birthday presents on his 40th birthday to help refugees by creating his own birthday needs list! What a wonderful idea! Adam, we didn’t recognise you with your clothes on….well done Adam and well done Needs list! https://needslist.co/adamsbday
