Haley Kopmeyer Joins Julie Foudy’s Sock Talk Panel
Last night Seattle Reign FC goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer was a part of Julie Foudy’s Sock Talk panel at the University Temple in Seattle, Washington. Foudy’s Sock Talk’s, known for bringing together female athletes to discuss topics such as confidence and leadership, was part of a promotion for her new book Choose to Matter.
Foudy opened the night discussing her book, and her goals to teach others what she has learned about leadership during her storied playing career with the U.S. Women’s National Team.
“I want people to learn how not just to empower yourself but to empower others,” said Foudy. “I think that’s an incredibly important part of leadership.”

On the panel with Kopmeyer was Seattle Storm co-owner Ginny Gilder, local high school soccer player Kelis, and former FIFA council member Moya Dodd. Topics for the night included how to get out of your comfort zone, building confidence, leadership, and going for your goals even if you aren’t entirely ready to do so.
Kopmeyer spoke extensively about going for her goals, referencing the 2013 NWSL season in which she was waived. Reflecting on her discussion with Seattle Reign FC head coach and general manager Laura Harvey, Kopmeyer remembered it as a crossroads moment.
“It was a real decision moment for me,” said Kopmeyer. “I had a degree and could probably get a solid job with my connections, but I didn’t really want that for myself. I set a timeline of seven to eight months to do whatever it takes to get on a team.”

Kopmeyer said she took every odd job possible, and coached for as many teams and clubs as she could at the time. Eventually Kopmeyer rejoined Reign FC. That journey gave Kopmeyer a new outlook on how to jump out of your comfort zone.
“You have to think ‘I’m going to make this work no matter the sacrifice to get there,’ and in the long run it usually works out.”
