Reign FC Legend: Alisha Valavanis

The Legends campaign, a partnership between Seattle Reign FC and Avanade, honors women for their extraordinary contributions in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Prior to the match against the Houston Dash this Saturday, the club will recognize Seattle Storm President and General Manager Alisha Valavanis as a Reign FC Legend.

“As a former collegiate athlete and coach, I’ve spent my life on teams,” said Valavanis. “I’ve always been keenly aware of the dynamics and factors that lead to success and failures. It fascinated me to see how a healthy team culture seemed to provide the competitive advantage. This insight and interest inspired me to move off the court and take on the challenge of working with the ‘team behind the team,’ and in this case, running an organization like the Seattle Storm.”

During her time with the Storm, Valavanis has brought stars such as Jewell Loyd and Breanna Stewart through the WNBA Draft, and has also secured Seattle as the host of the 2017 WNBA All-Star game.

All of these accomplishments have added to the unique sports culture in Seattle, a city that strongly supports their professional women’s sports teams.

“Seattle is a special city, and one of only a few in the country that have both a professional women’s basketball team and a professional women’s soccer team,” said Valavanis. “That speaks to the heart of what our community values. Young girls and boys growing up in a city where they have male and female professional athletes to look up to and aspire to be like.”

Valavanis believes having two professional women’s sports teams provides to help propel equality and justice in future generations as well as society today. She also offers her own advice to those children watching their heroes take the court and the field every weekend.

“You need time to really discover what it is you enjoy doing,” said Valavanis. “Then the difference between making it or not tends to come down to hard work and dedication. You’ve heard it before but it’s true, no one and nothing can stop you realizing your life’s purpose.”

For Valavanis, part of that purpose has been pushing women’s sports to the forefront. A key part of achieving that in the Pacific Northwest has been the relationship between Seattle Reign FC and the Seattle Storm.

“The relationship between the Reign and the Storm exemplifies the powerful impact of women supporting women,” said Valavanis. “On and off the field or court, we are stronger together. Our sports teams support one another and our business’ work together to generate marketing and amplified visibility as a whole.”

Seattle will continue the 2017 NWSL regular season on Saturday, April 22nd at Memorial Stadium when they host the Houston Dash. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm PT. Single match tickets are now available. To purchase tickets, visit reignfc.com/tickets or call the Reign FC ticket office at (855) REIGN-FC.
