Seattle Reign FC has announced the re-signing of defender Merritt Mathias for the 2017 NWSL season. Mathias has been with the club since 2015. Per team and league policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

“I am thrilled to be returning to Seattle for my fifth season in the NWSL,” said Mathias. “I love everything about this organization and consider Seattle my second home. I’m really looking forward to what this season has in store for myself and the team. As always, let it reign!”

Mathias appeared in 19 matches for the club during the 2016 season, starting in 17 and scoring one goal. The Birmingham, Alabama native made the switch from forward to defender during the course of the season, and also earned her first call-up to the U.S. Women’s National Team.

“Merritt is someone that has been a huge part of the team now for the last two seasons,” said Seattle Reign FC head coach and general manager Laura Harvey. “She’s played in multiple positions which is a huge testament to her ability. When you have such a small squad, when you have someone that can play multiple positions, it’s huge.”
