Reign FC Rewind: Leaving It Late
When Seattle Reign FC forward Katie Johnson grabbed three points in Chicago with her 92nd minute strike, she wrote her name in the record books. While it was the latest game-winning goal for Reign FC, it wasn’t the latest goal in club history or even the club’s latest goal against the Chicago Red Stars.
Seattle has a history of late goals, with five stoppage time goals all-time, with two of those coming against this weekend’s opponent, rival Portland Thorns FC. Below is a look back at the latest strikes in Reign FC history.
August 16, 2017 — Katie Johnson in the 92nd minute on the road against the Chicago Red Stars
Johnson scored her third goal of the season to seal up three crucial points and Reign FC’s first-ever road win against the Chicago Red Stars. The rookie’s late goal made the scoreline 2–1 in favor of the visitors. It was the first stoppage time road goal for Reign FC, and the second stoppage time goal the club has scored against the Red Stars. The assist from defender Merritt Mathias was her first in 2017.
May 25, 2014 — Kim Little in the 92nd minute at home against the Western New York Flash
Little found the back of the net in stoppage time to steal a point against the Western New York Flash in a 2–2 tie. The goal also kept Reign FC’s unbeaten streak at Memorial Stadium intact, a streak that wouldn’t fall until the 2016 NWSL season. It was one of Little’s league-leading 16 goals during the 2014 NWSL season, which remains a league record for most goals scored in a single season.
July 27, 2014 — Kim Little in the 93rd minute at home against Portland Thorns FC
Little’s stoppage time goal was the club’s first against Thorns FC, and capped off a 5–0 rout against the visitors. The goal ensured the victory was Reign FC’s largest margin of victory in a match, and it remains so today. With the goal, Little became, and is still currently, the first-ever Reign FC player to score two stoppage time goals in a single NWSL season.
June 29, 2013 — Megan Rapinoe in the 93rd minute at home against the Chicago Red Stars

Rapinoe scored the first stoppage time goal in Reign FC history back in the inaugural 2013 NWSL season. Assisted by then rookie Christine Nairn, the goal sealed a 3–1 victory over the Chicago Red Stars. It was one of just five wins for Seattle Reign FC that season, and the club’s first victory over the Red Stars. The goal also marked Rapinoe’s first goal for Reign FC and first career NWSL goal after joining the club partway through the season.
August 27, 2016 — Megan Rapinoe in the 94th minute at home against Portland Thorns FC
In Rapinoe’s first match back with Reign FC after an ACL surgery and the 2016 Olympics, she finished a tight match with rival Thorns FC in style. With her 94th minute goal Reign FC secured a 3–1 victory over the Thorns to end the season series between the two sides at an even 1–1–2. It remains the latest goal scored in Reign FC history, and was the club’s second stoppage time goal against Portland.
