Seattle Reign FC has signed Danish international defender Theresa Nielsen, pending receipt of her P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Nielsen will join Seattle Reign FC prior to the start of the 2018 National Women’s Soccer League season.
“Theresa was one of the players on my wish list when I accepted the job in Seattle,” said Seattle Reign FC head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “Her ability to attack from the back is what is going to make us more dangerous as a team.”
Prior to spending the 2017 season with Vålerenga Fotball Damer, Nielsen had spent her entire professional career with Brøndby IF of the Elitedivisionen in Denmark. In 87 appearances for the club, Nielsen tallied 13 goals.
During her time with the club, Nielsen helped the team to four league championships, and five league cups. Brøndby IF made the quarterfinals of UEFA Women’s Champions League during the 2011–2012 season, and advanced all the way to the semifinals during the 2014–2015 season.
“I’m very grateful to be getting the opportunity to play for Reign FC,” said Nielsen. “The U.S. has some of the greatest players in the world, and I’m very excited that I’ll be blessed with the chance to play with and against them.”
Internationally, Nielsen has featured for the Denmark women’s national team since making her debut in 2008. A member of the 2017 EUROs roster, Nielsen played in all six matches of Denmark’s runner up campaign. Nielsen scored one goal and was named to the tournament’s Best XI for her efforts.
Currently in the midst of Women’s World Cup qualifiers, Nielsen has helped Denmark to a perfect 2–0–0 record and first place in Group 4. Denmark’s next qualifier is April 9th against Ukraine.
