“If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.” — Katharine Hepburn
Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
Hi everyone, my name is Alisa Bohac. I am a junior studying Information Assurance at the University of Nebraska Omaha. As one of the few women pursuing an IA degree at my school, I am very passionate about bridging the diversity gaps in IT. Currently, I am a part of two clubs that push for a stronger female presence in the IT field. I also help out with the code crush program held at my university that is aimed at encouraging young teens to try coding.
Fun Fact: This summer, I discovered I have a passion for traveling after I spent two weeks abroad in Tokyo. I am also a major dog lover and got myself a puppy for my birthday this summer.
What # would define your life journey?
Favorite website / app:
I am a major fan of Spotify. I love how I can turn to music for all of my moods, and I actually have certain playlists I listen to while I code.
Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
My biggest inspiration is definitely my mom. Regardless of what is going on in her life, she never gives up and always makes time for those who need her. Throughout my life, she has constantly stressed that I be a strong, independent, and confident woman. Time and time again, I have thought back upon the lessons she has taught me and have utilized her wisdom to help me through whatever it is I aim to overcome.
Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
Upon entering college as a Civil Engineering major, I quickly discovered that I was pursuing the wrong degree. However, I had received a scholarship which requires me to study either engineering or IT. I loved the scholarship community I was a part of and was blessed with such an amazing opportunity to go to school, so I decided to give IT a shot. I read through the degree choices on UNO’s College of IS&T website and selected Information Assurance. Although I had never coded before in my life and frankly, had no idea what coding was, I was determined to try it out. After sitting through my intro to IA and CS courses, I immediately fell in love. However, for my first couple semesters, I felt as though I was very behind other students who had programmed a lot in high school. At times, I felt very discouraged and compared myself to the other students who had been passionate about IT since high school. Regardless, I continued to push myself. I not only received straight A’s for my first three semesters, but I also became an active part of the College of IS&T where I have been granted many amazing opportunities.
My ideal job would allow me to travel the world and work with people from a variety of different backgrounds. Regardless of what position I hold, I want to be somewhere I can continue to learn and use my creativity and problem solving skills to benefit those around me. I absolutely love how the IT field gives you endless opportunities and a variety of career choices!
What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
A positive mentality is key. There are times I have caught myself getting discouraged due to how I was viewing a situation. However, simply taking a step back and reevaluating what is going on around me always does tremendous things for my mood, outlook, and motivation. As cliché as it sounds, staying positive can help you see things in a whole new light and can help you discover opportunities that you otherwise may not have noticed.
