Women Who Reign: Cathy Chen
“No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens.” — Michelle Obama

I’m studying CS and right now I’m most excited about my applying CS to social science. I also think neuroscience is really cool, especially the McGurk effect. Outside of CS, I like running and playing tennis and playing violin. I have a little brother who’s seven years younger than me (and who’s unfortunately taller than me now). Fun fact: My brother taught me how to juggle on my 19th birthday.

In my first tech experience in industry, it was tough transitioning from classroom CS to applying things in real-world settings. The huge variety of tools and practical things like reading documentation and writing BUILD files felt very overwhelming at first. Eventually I realized that I could figure things out if I just kept trying things out and moving forwards even if the entire sequence of what I had to do wasn’t completely clear.
Designing/creating tools that non-CS people can use for their work. In particular, maybe tools to be used in computational neuroscience/social science.
What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Take a class that might be completely unrelated to anything else just because it seems really cool — I think these classes gave me the best idea of what I might want to do in the future.
