Women Who Reign: Nadia Chilmonik
“Never Never Never Give Up.” ~Winston Churchill
Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
I’m from Omak, Washington, I lived in DC and now in Bushwick NYC. I am a painter, algorithm designer /consultant at Thicket Labs, and open data enthusiast (part of NASA’s open data program Datanauts). I have a dog named Rothko & I danced ballet for 16 years! I also worked on choreographing and teaching pieces to kids!
What # would define your life journey?
Favorite website / app:
Thicket, the platform the company I work at is developing is fantastic! I love instagram, twitch (great analytics), and the open NASA portal for their great data sets. I write a lot of code in R Studio for machine learning algorithms but my favorite tool was AMPL (costs a ton) for optimization problems. I also like Java.
Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
My mother and father inspire me most. My mother Sharon is a deeply kind and empathetic person with wisdom to spare on how the world works and how to be yourself in it despite others opinions. My father Ned likes to tinker and helps me think outside the box. He’s an innovator by nature.
Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
Choosing to move to NYC to pursue my dream job at an early stage startup or playing it safe in DC at a larger company for a larger salary. I decided to challenge myself and it really paid off. I have learned so much and by putting myself out of my comfort zone I continue to learn more about myself and about my field.
Who supports you on your pursuits?
The best supporters in my life for my goals are the women in my life achieving great things. They understand my journey and will help me out whenever possible including Briana Vecchione who suggested me for ReigningIt and my sorority sisters (I am an alum of AOE the engineering sorority).
My ideal job is CEO or VPN of innovation where I get to design algorithms for client needs. Also I think algorithms are an art and ideally I would like a job where I can experiment with that principle.
What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Always ask for what you want because otherwise you definitely won’t get it. Apply for anything you want even if you don’t think you are “ready” & do so with confidence. Try to get yourself exposure through mutually beneficial partnerships and projects and always do so authentically and with the best intentions toward others.
