4 Secrets for Savings

1. Perfect Timing
- Most people do their remodeling during the Summer or between September-December while the kids are in school. This is when contractors get the most business so they are likely to increase their prices following the golden rules of “Supply and Demand”. Start your project right after the New Year, when contractors are begging for business. You’ll be more likely to receive discounted prices, but they’ll never tell you that.
2. How to Find the Discounts
- Buy the supplies you need from a nearby auction. Often times, people try to do home renovations on their own and buy more supplies than they need, or just buy the wrong supplies in general. Afterwards they get rid of it and it gets sold in an auction; brand new at unbelievable discounts. Another secret most people don’t know, ask if your contractor has any surplus materials left over from other projects. If not ask if they know anyone who does. Contractors often have leftover (floorboards, wood, recycled vanity sets), you may be able to get to them before they throw them away.
3. DIY Demolition
- If your project is outdoors, don’t be afraid to do your own demolition. Why pay a professional to destroy your house when you can do it yourself for free? You may even relieve some stress in the process. The only time you need a professional to do your demolition is if it is indoors or close to the house where you may risk damaging wires. Wire damage can hurt your wallet a lot worse.
4. DON’T …
- … Move the toilet or the sinks. Adjusting pipes is extremely expensive. If you can, avoid moving your toilet or sinks so that you can save money. If moving either of them is crucial for your renovation project make sure you upgrade your pipes at the same time. It seems like you’re spending extra money but it saves you a lot more money in the long run.
