CAP Review of the El Paso VA

As a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee and, more importantly, an El Pasoan, I felt compelled to share publicly the recent Clinical Assessment Program (CAP) Review of the El Paso VA, the link to which you can find below. The CAP Review identifies several areas of concern within the El Paso VA. Most alarmingly, it shows that of a sample of 35 patients with PTSD, 29 percent of them did not receive a mandated suicide risk assessment.

I am disappointed that in the midst of a veteran suicide crisis, we are not screening veterans appropriately for suicide risk. I spoke with Col. Amaral immediately after reading this report to share my concern and to gain his commitment to ensuring that all veterans with PTSD get the lifesaving care that they need. I will follow up with him to guarantee that the measures he has told me he is taking are effective.
