Why I Voted for the VA Accountability First Act
The VA’s number one asset is the extraordinary team of employees who work to take care of veterans.
At a time when 20 veterans a day are taking their own lives, its more important than ever that veterans have access to prompt, quality care. The VA cannot deliver that when it is struggling to implement disciplinary procedures. According to the Government Accountability Office it takes an average of six months to a year to remove a civil servant in the federal government.
Today I voted for the VA Accountability First Act (H.R.1259) which shortens the notification and review period for demotion and removal, while preserving an employee’s due process right to file an appeal with the merit systems protection board and ultimately an administrative law judge.
This will preserve due process, allow the VA to ensure that it has the right people in the right place, and let the VA focus on its mission of caring for and being accountable to veterans.
