This past week I worked to bring accountability and representation to my constituents here in Washington. From committee hearings to important bill introductions to advocating for my constituents, we made long strides this week. Read about it all below:

I am honored to introduce my Cuban Family Reunification Act, which aims to support Cuban families who have been affected by the suspension of the Cuban Family Reunification Program. I am devastated to see how Cuban-American families have been used as pawns to advance a political agenda- families belong together. This bill is long overdue and I’m proud to be doing what the Administration refused to do.

This week I also stood by our community as we presented Casa Cuba FIU with the National Endowment for the Humanities grant. It will be used to fund the design for a state-of-the-art center at FIU that will help further awareness and study of Cuban heritage in the community. This is an incredible step in empowering our Cuban family and friends.

This week we also saw the Department of Health and Human Services refuse to renew the contract for Caliburn, the private company that was profiting off holding detained children and running the now-empty Homestead Child Detention Center. This comes to show that all the pressure we put on the Administration was worth it- now to shut it down completely.

I am proud to have voted in favor of the Preventing Online Sales of E-cigarettes to Children Act which passed the House with bipartisan support. With several deaths and several hundred cases of lung disease in Florida alone, I refuse to allow for the next generation of children become addicted to tobacco and place their lives in danger.

Earlier this week, in the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I addressed the importance of investing in waste water systems and funding green infrastructure projects for the Water Infrastructure Sustainability and Efficiency Act. Sewage is leaking into our oceans, impacting our beaches, our health, and our economy - we need to do better.

On Wednesday, I questioned the CEO of The Boeing Company and his role in accounting for two Boeing plane crashes that resulted in the deaths of 346 passengers. Safety should never come second to corporate profits. The right thing to do, both for the company and for the families of the victims, is for Mr. Muilenburg to resign.

Thursday was a difficult day for all of us voting in favor for the impeachment resolution. I didn’t run for office to impeach the President, but my constituents entrusted me to represent them and protect our democracy. The only viable way to protect our democracy is to vote in favor of an impeachment resolution and thoroughly investigate the President’s wrongdoings.

It was a busy and important week in Washington, and I’m proud of what we have accomplished. As I continue working #ForThePeople, sign up for my newsletter here for updates from me.
