Defense spending this year totals $589 billion out of a total spending level of $3.9 trillion. So the military makes up about 15% of federal spending.
Congress has approved appropriations for war (from 2001–20014) that total $1.6 trillion for military operations, base support, weapons maintenance, training of Afghan and Iraq security forces, reconstruction, foreign aid, embassy costs, and veterans’ health care for the war operations initiated since the 9/11 attacks.
So those 13 years of war cost not even half of what we are spending just this year.
