In this important Presidential election year, let me define a key difference between Republicans and Democrats. Democrats fight for all people. Republicans don’t. That is why Democrats created Social Security and Medicare for every American. That is why Democrats are fighting to pass the HEROES Act (H.R. 6800) to help all people in communities impacted by the COVID-19 recession. Republicans are not. Every American can gauge the fairness or unfairness of the Republican-drafted CARES Act (H.R. 748) vs. the Democratic-drafted HEROES bill by their return of your tax dollars to help your community.

Despite the proportionally higher COVID-19 infection rates…

It has been such a tumultuous start to the New Year in many ways. Progress can seem elusive in moments such as these, nonetheless, my work at home and in Washington remains laser-focused on our region’s economic future, the retirement security of our workers and retirees, the health of our most precious natural resource, and the health and well-being of families across the district. Thank you for this opportunity to bring you up to date on a few of our initiatives and get your thoughts as Congress gets into full swing for the year.

As you may know, we are…

Agenda would give unions and workers more power to negotiate better pay and punish predatory corporations

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Dean of the Ohio Delegation, today announced her strong support for the House and Senate Democrats “A Better Deal” Agenda for workers. Today, U.S. House and Senate Democrats stood with labor leaders and unveiled one of the critical tenets of their economic agenda, “A Better Deal.” Specifically, Democrats proposed a plan to safeguard workers’ freedom to negotiate with employers, penalize companies that violate workers’ rights, protect unions and workers’ abilities to strike, and more.

“On the campaign trail, then-candidate Donald Trump promised workers across Ohio and our Industrial Heartland that he would fight for them, well…

If you lack insurance, you can enroll in a health care plan starting on November 1st. Health insurance can protect you from astronomical costs when a serious accident or illness occurs. Did you know that the average cost for a three-day hospital stay is $30,000? Or that a broken leg can cost up to $7,500? Health insurance helps protect you and your family from unexpected costs.

Coverage could be more affordable than you think. That’s because financial help is available.

The recent devastation that Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are dealing with after Hurricane Maria is unimaginable. The damage has impacted 3.6 million American citizens in the region, and with significant power outages, the telecommunications infrastructure is completely destroyed.

While some initial steps were taken to offer assistance, we must do more for our fellow Americans. I have joined 145 of my colleagues in the U.S. House to urge the Administration to appoint a senior general to oversee all recovery efforts, to deploy the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and to increase personnel to assist local law enforcement…

Our recent field hearing on trade and jobs in Brook Park at UAW Local 1250 was a stark reminder of just how devastating Wall Street driven trade deals have been on the American workforce. As the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is renegotiated, the hearing was also an opportunity to hear from labor and business on how NAFTA has affected them and to hear their ideas on how to make our trade agreements better.

As you and I know, NAFTA has had devastating effects on the U.S. economy. Under NAFTA, the U.S. trade deficit ballooned to tens of billions…

On September 7, the consumer credit reporting agency Equifax disclosed a data breach from earlier this year that compromised the sensitive personal information of 143 million Americans. All Ohioans should take precautionary measures to ensure their financial security.

Consumers deserve to have confidence that their data will be kept safe when using financial instruments like applying for a credit card or buying a home. Congress will hold hearings on this criminal act to find out what went wrong, what can be done to protect consumers, and what must be done to prevent future breaches.

As a longtime advocate for protecting…

I want to update you on our work to help retirees, older Americans and those with disabilities. There are few issues that our government considers that impact the daily lives of Americans more than Social Security. Social Security is not only a critical component of retirement for millions of Americans it is also a compact between the government and our people. Even in difficult economic times, including 13 recessions over the last 75 years, Social Security has never once failed to pay it obligations to beneficiaries. Social Security is not an entitlement; it is an earned benefit that retirees receive…

In April, I had the honor to travel with a bipartisan Congressional Delegation to Germany, Poland and Italy. The trip included leaders from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the House Appropriations Committee as well as Military leaders. Particularly now with the Executive Branch making contradictory statements about U.S. resolve toward NATO, it is incumbent the U.S. does not leave any doubt in the minds of our friends, or foes, as to our nation’s firm commitment to defending liberty and upholding our historic alliance with Europe. The delegation visited U.S. …
