Statement on Texas Grand Jury Indictments of Anti-Planned Parenthood Activists

Truth and justice prevailed when the Texas Grand Jury cleared Planned Parenthood of any wrongdoing, and instead, indicted the organization’s two anti-abortion activists. I applaud the Grand Jury’s rightful decision, as it proves that those who engage in criminality to pursue their political aims will not get away with it. At the same time, it reinforces a woman’s right to make decisions about her reproductive health care.

Unfortunately, the accuser’s distorted truth and heavily-edited videos, have led to a grave misuse of taxpayer dollars.

In fact, three investigations by House Committees found no evidence of illegal activity on the part of abortion providers, yet even still, House Republicans insist on continuing their sham of a select investigative panel. This panel must be disbanded, and any further calls for defunding Planned Parenthood must cease and desist.

The false videos have caused an alarming increase in hateful rhetoric, smear campaigns, and violence against abortion providers and patients, including the abhorrent shooting in Colorado Springs, arson attacks, and death threats. This assault on the right to access health care cannot — must not — stand.

Health care is a human right. In addition, reproductive justice and freedom for women is a civil rights issue. I look forward to a day when women’s right to choose is no longer in question, and all Americans are free to make choices about their health and lives without interference.
