So you want to be a digital marketing hot shot? You think you’re ready to shine and gain some recognition. That’s great! I hope you have what it takes. Digital marketers are a different breed. Successful ones share a number of characteristics that few might have. Without them, it’s damn near impossible to become an authority in digital marketing so step up to the plate and see if you fit in with the elite or if you’re just one of the crowd.

Making it big means understanding what’s behind the person. Successful digital marketers have 4 character traits and one fundamental piece of knowledge. They are:

  • Educated
  • Proactive
  • Diligent
  • Humble
  • Aware of when it’s time to cool off

Hit the books

Education will take you places in the digital marketing world. It’s constantly evolving, transforming, branching, and new theories and practices are constantly being developed. Additionally, technology, tools, software, and media are just some of the things that are always changing. Knowing about them is ok, but understanding them is essential, especially in your chosen field of digital marketing. It’s important to be on top of the latest news and trends; read blogs related with your expertise. Take a course or two. Curiosity may have killed the cat but the lack of it will most definitely kill a digital marketer’s career. Go to social media and the top influencers to get there takes. Ask and ye shall receive they say.

You don’t need someone telling you what to do

Great digital marketers are known for being proactive and taking the first step. They encourage themselves to get better and stay at the top of the totem pole by taking chances and thinking outside the box. This trait is reflected by their capacity to solve problems and delegate functions. On top of that, when someone is highly proactive he or she displays a passion like no other for what is being done, especially if it’s his or her own baby.

Diligence is the mother of good luck

That expression was true back in the 16th century when it was first coined and it’s just as true if not more so in today’s society. You can’t simply go around the digital marketing world playing it by ear or with a “fake it until you make it” attitude. Accomplished digital marketers always have a strategy for their next campaign. It revolves around

  • Planning
  • Analyzing
  • Adapting
  • Repeating.

Taking time to organize what you are going to accomplish will make executing your campaign much easier and great digital marketers know this. They sit down and analyze what the client needs, who the target audience is, what strategies can be used, and program goals for every step of the process.

Once they’ve decided on the appropriate plan of attack, effective digital marketers use analytic tools that suit them to see how well the plan is going and where it needs to be tweaked.

Remember, you can have the perfect plan on paper, but more often than not something will go wrong. Murphy’s Law has taught us that extremely well. The best digital marketers know this and they have the ability to adapt to setback, which are often the result of analyzing.

A successful campaign is a constant cycle of planning, analyzing, and adapting. It will only end when the project is seen through to the end of its life cycle.

You can’t do everything yourself and top-notch digital marketers have a deep understanding of this. They are always willing to take feedback, ask for help from people who are more specialized at something, make contacts, work in team, and they reach out to those in the know. Selfishness in the digital marketing world will only lead to isolation from the herd.

Enjoy the little things in life

Unless you are a machine, there is no way you will read the smorgasbord of content that is released daily. How effective or successful do you think a digital manager who is constantly nervous or never sleeps is? Chill out and enjoy life. Spend time with family, take up a hobby, enjoys the sights and sounds of the city, go to a park. Do whatever you need to do to make sure you get a good night’s sleep and that you have energy for the next day’s work.

So, there you have it. There’s really no big secret to being a leading digital marketer. Study up, take the initiative, be diligent, mingle, and take a breath every once in a while. Those are the qualities you’ll find in the best of the best. Most if not all are pretty much common sense. But as Voltaire once said, “Common sense is not so common.”
