If they can do it, why can’t you?
Do you know someone who has less drive, determination, worth ethic and smarts then you but has more success then you have? Of course, we all do. So if they can do it, why can’t you?
Steve Jobs was quoted as saying “Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it”. When the Sales Manager interviewed me for a Sales Consultant position, he asked “Why should I hire someone who has no experience in sales?”, my reply to that was “Because if you’re top Sales Consultant is selling 15 vehicles / month, then there’s no reason why I can’t either”. Call it cocky, but it worked. I was hired on the spot! But now I had to back those words up with results so the pressure was on. With zero experience in the Auto Industry and still dirty from being at the Welding Shop where I was building 400 barrel tanks for the Oil Field, I was in way over my head. To get there, I needed to get to work and FOCUS on the goal which was to back my words with accountable action and be the top Salesperson.
Within 90 days I was atop the Sales board and I never looked back. Once that goal was accomplished, my confidence sky rocketed and I continued to set monthly, weekly and daily goals because I knew how meaningful they were to the success I was having. Six years after starting in Sales, I was able to Partner into an Auto Dealership and will own the entire company in 2 short years from now. That means I will have gone from a Sales Consultant to 100% Owner of a Multi Million Dollar Automotive Dealership within a 10 year period, by the age of 33, without having the luxury of my family owning the business before me or growing up in the auto industry.
When you have clear goals with direct focus you’ll amaze yourself on what you can accomplish. There’s nothing new about that statement but I believe in the value of sharing personal success stories so people can see that it’s not about being special or gifted, anyone can reach levels beyond their own expectations once they accept that they are their own limitation. If you believe you can accomplish a certain goal, that’s half the battle. The other half is taking disciplined action with daily goal setting, educating yourself by listening to Podcasts, reading books, following inspirational leaders and entrepreneurs on social media, watching interviews with successful people online, etc.
I remember watching Paul Cummings online training videos when I was in Sales and he always emphasized to improve 1% every day. At the time, the value of that never settled in but looking back on it now I know exactly what he was saying. In a nutshell, if we have the discipline, set clear goals, make micro improvements on ourselves daily and have direct focus on what we want to accomplish, is it really unrealistic to believe that the impossible is possible?
Bottom line is YOU can achieve attainable goals in life. You set your own limitations. Don’t make excuses. Take action. Hold yourself accountable. Enjoy the process. Stay disciplined. And have some fun with it along the way!
