According to a latest report published by The World Forum on the ongoing “Great Resignation” wave, 1 out of 5 workers globally, is planning to quit in 2022. Are you a part of this wave too?

As a fresher or a job-seeker, do you still find yourself googling “How to get a better job?” or “How to get into the corporate world?”, “How to improve my communication skills?””

Even as a freelancer, you would come across the same problem of how to find clients for your work.

Then here’s the kicker for you…Here are 5 practical tips to decode the answers around how to behave around seniors/managers at corporate offices.

(And a BONUS fun tip at the end…:P)

Tip #1: Hack the #DressCode

Though this seems the most talked about tip across the internet but it still stays at the top of the list.

The pertinent chicken-and-egg problem here is that you will not know the dress code until your first day or two at office but you have to understand what to wear on your first or second day without visiting the office before.

So in order to solve this problem, the most practical hack here is to pull off a formal full-sleeved shirt and formal pants or jeans combination for your first day. This could work for males as well as females but females also have the additional option to pull off a decent kurti with the jeans.

This works wonders based on the size of the company you are joining. For eg. if it’s an early-stage startup, you could work out with a decent jeans-shirt combination.

But being mindful of the kind of jeans that you wear is also a must. Avoid wearing too funky or casual torn jeans.

DO NOT wear shorts at the workplace and wear the old formal shirt-and-pant/jeans combination for at least the first week while you assess the dress code at a workplace.

One important disclaimer is this applies for the first day at your workplace and not for an interview.

Second important disclaimer is if you are joining a multinational corporation or a well-known service- based company like TCS, Wipro, Mckinsey, it is best advisable to wear a full-sleeved shirt and formal pants combination since those are client-based companies.

What I have noticed is most of the time, except for client meetings or visits, pretty much an informal dress code suffices in most companies.

Again, a warning here would be to not overtly go about wearing casual jeans, sleeveless tops/t-shirts to work.

Overdressing with formal suit pieces for the first day of your work is also a big NO-NO at the graduate/post-graduate fresher/intern level.

Tip #2: Understand the #CultureCode

There is a certain unsaid #CultureCode around each company’s culture and how it all works. To understand and crack this, should be your top priority as you enter the corporate world.

There are few common questions that you could ask the people around you in order to do this.

Ask yourself following 6 questions to know if you are correctly doing it:

  1. Do I understand how all the teams in the company function?
  2. Do I understand who are the most important folks around me and how the team dynamics work?
  3. Do I know who are the 3 folks that I am dependent on to work on a day-to-day basis?
  4. Do I know who are the 3 folks that are dependent on me to work on a day-to-day basis?
  5. Do I understand the overall pace, nature and attitude of each important person that I have to work with on a daily basis?
  6. How efficient and responsive is the HR team on a daily basis?

These 5 questions will enable you to pretty much understand the company culture and assess if you fit in well.

If you smartly answer and evaluate the answers to these questions, you will intuitively be able to deliver the best for the company after a period of time as well as grow and learn better.

This brings me to my next tip…

Tip #3: Know your #PersonalCode

This is one of the most important hacks that you need to evaluate just before joining a new workplace.

Grab a pen and a paper to assess your #PersonalCode before joining a company. It happens that most times what we want to achieve/learn by working at a company is not clear to ourselves and at the end, we are constantly disappointed with what we are working on.

So be very clear on following things from Day 1:

  1. What do you want to achieve by joining this company? Is it just the salary that inspires you or are you someone who wants to learn and grow more?
  2. Are you someone who would compromise on your “work-life balance” to learn more?
  3. What is the long-term goal, let’s say, in the next 5 years?
  4. What inspires you to work today? Is it aligned with your work/job at your current office?
  5. How would I rate myself as, out of 10, in terms of communication skills?

As you figure out the answers to the above question, you would become confident and have the ability to conquer all the problems and issues that come across you in your lifetime at the new workplace.

This would automatically drive you to be more accountable towards your work till the endgame. And not to forget, as you learn to be more accountable, you transform yourself slowly to a leader which entails the most demanded trait and attitude at any workplace irrespective of their size.

This brings me to my next tip…But wait, let’s take a chai break here :P
