⚠️ The Rewound Web App Has Launched! GET IT HERE: REWOUND.FM
NOTE: We’re launching REWOUND.FUND to fund development of the web app REWOUND.APP which will work on iPhone without Apple’s approval and an Android app (THE irony!)
We launched an App that let you customize your iPhone to look like a 2000s era MP3 player. As Rewound grew exponentially across the world from Japan to China to Iran to Russia and the rest of mainland Europe, Apple KILLED it.
People were flooded with nostalgia — in dark times it was an escape that could only be described by this gif:
A skin ecosystem blossomed
a Cambrian explosion of user created skins occurred at #rewoundskins
It got to #19 in the US Music App charts and charted globally. It was a viral sensation, spreading across the world.
SO MUCH LOVE
Something was happening, something magic — people across the world were rediscovering an old love together, experiencing their music in a whole old way via a programable music player…. THEN
Apple KILLED IT
REASONS
What were Apple’s reasons for killing Rewound?
1. Copying iPod Design
Rewound was specifically designed not to infringe on Apple’s trademarks and we didn’t. Rewound could look many ways. Not until users started sharing/using clickwheel skins did they ban the app.
Apple have carte blanch over the AppStore and they took it down. The truth is:
- An optional scrolling motion to navigate a menu isn’t Apple IP
- A button layout without a wheel or scrolling navigation isn’t Apple IP
- Similar menu systems are found in all operating systems.
- Skins were user added/downloaded, we didn’t include them in the app.
Enabling scrolling navigation, a clickwheel skin + matching layout were 100% opt-in. Users decision.
2. Charging for Apple Music features
This is less unreasonable BUT they already approved the in app purchase before Clickwheel skins started proliferating… then they decided it was not ok. Double standard?
3. People would mistake it for Apple product
There is just no way.
TRAPPED
We can’t update the app to get it re-approved without breaking the app for all 170,000+ users. So we’re going to have to upload a separate version but feel it is barely worth the time or effort to even try and humor them, they’re just going to keep saying no until users can’t possible make it like their favourite music player.
Rewound WILL LIVE via REWOUND.APP
In the digital age THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY and we’re going find a way for 2000s era MP3 players to come back into our lives for good.
We’re launching REWOUND.FUND. Since we have been deprived of revenue by Apple we are starting this fund for development of a Rewound Web App for iPhone/Android and Android native app.
