Kane Foster Hi Kane, there are a few ways to answer your question. In simple terms the answer is Yes! Mormons claim/preach/teach to be the “only ones with God’s authority to baptise” (Why did Jesus go to John? Because John the baptist was “the only one” at the time who had such authority in all of Israel) IT is a very bold claim and yours is an important and very valid question. If one is to believe Joseph Smith account (as I do), he took this same question to God (he wanted to know which church was God’s true church and had His authority so he could join it).The answer that followed to his question (see “Joseph Smith’s first vision”) is referred by the LDS church as part of the “restoration of all things” in these, the “last days” (because of the falling away from the truth that introduced “the apostasy/dark ages” as partly found in Paul’s writings to the early believers (saints) in the New Testament (see 2 Thessalonian 2:1–5, KJV) soon after the death of the Apostles of Jesus Christ).
Joseph was told by God that none of the churches of the time had His authority to baptise, to administered his sacraments nor to speak in His behalf (It is a very bold statement and you can then see why most Christian churches and denomination have seen the Latter-Day Saints as a sect and not part of the Christian world!)
This is the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (aca Mormons). We believe this to be the truth and that is why we have at present 90,000+ full time proselyting missionaries sent across the world extending the invitation to “all mankind” (dead and alive, hence our genealogical and Temple vicarious work) to come unto Christ and be baptised by those who hold God’s priesthood and authority.
When Moses was called to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt, he faced the same authority claim issues. Even Jesus Christ was rejected by the established Church leaders of His time. All believers of Christ face the same dilemma today and if you are searching for the truth then I invite you to search the Holy Scriptures, see James 1:5–6 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.(the King James Version of Holy Bible is the one we study from).
Having done that, next read the Book of Mormon, another testament of Jesus Christ. At this point the second scripture reference you should specially read is in the book of Moroni (Moroni 10:3–5 “ 3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.
4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.”
I hope this answers your question. God bless!
