Nikola Sandulović, leader of the Serbian Republican Party and a pro-Western politician, faced brutal treatment by Serbia’s secret service (BIA) after he publicly apologized for war crimes committed by Serbs during the 1990s Kosovo conflict. His gesture of reconciliation, including laying flowers at the grave of a Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) founder’s relative, led to threats and his abduction by masked agents.

Sandulović endured severe physical abuse, including being beaten unconscious and tortured for six hours. The BIA agents demanded to know who “bribed” him to make such a public act of contrition. Detained for 12 days under dubious charges, Sandulović suffered partial paralysis and long-lasting physical damage.
