Many drummers around the world book in with a new tutor because they are close to where they live, in many cases this could be a good option but not in every case, all good tutors will have no problem with having a free chat with you first before you book anything.
Here are the things you should do to make sure the tutor has the skills you need to progress on your instrument.
lots of new tutors are popping up all over the place many because they don’t have enough work from playing so they decide to teach, in many cases the teaching will be dropped as soon as a new playing opportunity comes along, make sure you check this out first.
Things to check before booking.
1. Do they have a track record as a teacher.
2. Do they have a dedicated space to teach in.
3. Do they have other students you could talk to first to get a testimonial.
4. Are they willing to have a free of charge no obligation call or meeting to discuss your needs.
5. Do they have the skill set to teach you what you want to know.
6. Do they have the relevant insurances and child protection details in place.
Once you have decided and booked make a note of the next steps to make sure you are getting what you want.
1. Do they seem organised and reliable.
2. Did they ask you about what you like in terms of music and drummers, your influences are very important for a tutor to know.
3. Do you feel comfortable in the surroundings and with the tutor.
4. Is the the equipment you are learning on in good working order and to a professional standard.
5. Did they set you a structure of what to practice In between your lessons
6. Did they cover what you initially asked about.
If you follow these steps you should be ok, but if you are looking for specific topics you want to learn don’t be afraid to shop around and find the best fit to your needs, at the end of the day learning can become expensive and you need to make sure you get more your money’s worth it will be worth it in the long run even if that means travelling.
