Michigan Tourism: Worth the Trip
By: Quinn Alexander
You’re driving in your car and hear actor Tim Allen’s voice describing Sleeping Bear Dunes, historic light houses nestled on the Great Lakes, and America’s Great Comeback City, Detroit. The Michigan native is describing our state, Pure Michigan.
The award-winning Pure Michigan campaign has placed our tourism industry ahead of its regional competitors for a destination that offers vibrant fall colors, professional and college sports, strong boat and water sports, and fishing opportunities.
It’s no wonder people want to visit our state when the New York Times named Detroit one of “52 Places to Visit in 2017” and National Geographic placed Sleeping Bear Dunes on its list of “21 Best Beaches in the World.”
But not only do visitors reap the benefits of our state, so do our local businesses and communities. In 2016 the Pure Michigan campaign helped drive five million trips to Michigan, with those travelers spending $1.5 billion at local businesses. The tourism industry has also been an asset to Michigan’s economy. In 2016 the state received $107 million in tax revenue, bringing the total revenue since the campaign’s launch to $664 million.
Whether you’re a resident or visitor of Michigan, everyone can experience our breath taking landscapes and unique attractions that Pure Michigan has to offer. But hopefully our state can turn these visitors into our friends, neighbors, and fellow Michiganders.
