Have you ever felt something missing despite having everything to be happy? In our fast-paced world, where instant gratification is the norm, it’s easy to confuse momentary pleasure with true happiness. Recently, I wasted an entire day avoiding my responsibilities and what I needed to do. I dove into TikTok and YouTube Shorts, seeking distractions. I felt something was lacking, but I didn’t want to confront that emptiness; instead, I chose to silence my thoughts with “temporary relief” and convinced myself that “tomorrow would be another day,” thus avoiding facing the consequences of my inaction. This leads us to a fundamental question: are we truly seeking happiness or just a temporary relief from discontent?

Pleasure, although essential, is a fleeting human experience. Our brains are wired to seek it in quick bursts: a delicious meal, an exciting purchase. However, psychology teaches us that pleasure is transitory and can lead us into an endless cycle of pursuit without finding lasting satisfaction, known as the “hedonic treadmill.”

Aristotle introduced the concept of eudaimonia, which describes a state of being achieved through cultivating virtue and realizing one’s potential. Unlike momentary joy, eudaimonia is about living according to one’s true self, making decisions that reflect our virtues and contribute to the common good.

Strategies for Cultivating Eudaimonia

  1. Personal reflection: Dedicate regular time to reflect on your values and aspirations. Consider keeping a journal where you can explore your thoughts and emotions deeply.
  2. Mindfulness practice: Implement mindfulness and meditation practices to stay present and aware, which can help you align your daily actions with your deepest values.
  3. Lifelong learning: Seek opportunities for personal and spiritual growth through books, courses, and other continuing education forms.

Examples in Popular Culture

  • Inside Out”: This Pixar film shows us how every emotion, including sadness, plays a crucial role in our psyche. Accepting all our emotions is essential for our mental health and pursuit of happiness.
  • Soul”: Here, a music teacher rediscovers that true happiness is not found in visible achievements but in appreciating life itself and living according to his true purpose.

Ultimately, true happiness is not found in the fleeting pleasures dopamine offers us but in a life lived with purpose and authenticity. The choices we make every day can lead us on a more enriching path. Are we merely satisfying momentary desires or building a life that brings us true happiness? In this era of instant gratification, consciously choosing eudaimonia is the first step toward lasting joy and fulfillment.

I invite you to examine how you seek happiness in your life and consider adjustments that could lead you to deeper, lasting satisfaction. Share your reflections and progress; together, we can inspire each other to live a fuller, more meaningful life.
