With the recent release of "Inside Out 2", introducing new emotions into the beloved Pixar narrative, it's a perfect time to revisit the first film and delve into the significance of our emotional landscape.

The Complexity of Emotions

“Inside Out” is a Pixar movie that delves into the mind of Riley, an 11-year-old girl grappling with the challenges of moving to a new city and school due to her father’s job. The plot centers on how the five main emotions in Riley’s mind — Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear — navigate and manage her daily experiences.

The story takes an intriguing turn when Joy and Sadness are accidentally ejected from the emotion headquarters, the control center of Riley’s mind. This leaves Anger, Disgust, and Fear in charge, leading to suboptimal decisions and emotional reactions that reflect Riley’s internal turmoil. As Joy and Sadness struggle to return to headquarters, the movie reveals how each emotion plays a vital role in shaping Riley’s personality and her ability to adapt to her new life.

One of the deeper aspects of “Inside Out” is how Joy, who has been the predominant emotion in Riley’s life, tries to minimize and avoid Sadness. Joy firmly believes that happiness is the most beneficial state for Riley and thus attempts to keep Sadness away from control, fearing that her influences might harm or complicate things. This approach reflects a common societal tendency where happiness is often promoted as the emotional ideal and sadness is avoided, perceived as negative, or unnecessary.

However, as the film progresses, Joy realizes that Sadness also plays a crucial role in helping Riley process her nostalgia for her old life and accept her new reality. Sadness allows Riley to connect more authentically with her parents and friends, facilitating moments of comfort and mutual understanding. This underscores a vital message: all emotions are important and need to be experienced for complete emotional health. Joy learns that allowing Sadness to have a place in Riley’s life does not diminish her own importance but complements her function and enriches Riley’s human experience.

The Function and Importance of Emotions

  • Joy teaches us about the significance of happiness and optimism in our lives. She represents our constant pursuit of well-being and how this emotion drives us forward, helps us find the positive aspects of situations, and motivates us to achieve our goals.
  • Sadness, on the other hand, is equally crucial. Often viewed as negative, the film illustrates how sadness can be a force that helps us process losses, understand our experiences better, and deepen our relationships by fostering empathy and connection with others.
  • Anger manifests when we feel something unfair has happened. While it can lead to destructive actions if not managed properly, it is also the emotion that drives us to set boundaries, defend our beliefs, and make necessary changes.
  • Disgust protects us from things that might be harmful or unpleasant, not just in terms of food but also in our social interactions, guiding our decisions about what to avoid in our environment.
  • Fear, though often limiting, plays a vital role in our survival. It alerts us to danger and prepares our body to react to threats, helping us evaluate risks and act cautiously.

Philosophical Reflections and Aristotelian Ethics

Integrating Aristotle's virtue ethics helps us understand that virtue lies in the balance between excess and deficiency. "Inside Out" demonstrates that neither constant joy nor permanent sadness is desirable; rather, an emotional balance allows Riley, the protagonist, to adapt and grow through her experiences.

Aristotle's concept of Eudaimonia, or human flourishing, reflects the need for personal development and realizing our potential, which is evident in Riley's journey to integrate all her emotions and experiences.

Cinematic and Literary Integration

  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: This film delves into the complexity of human relationships and the depths of emotional pain. Through the main characters, Joel and Clementine, we experience the painful and often chaotic process of erasing memories to relieve emotional suffering. Similar to "Inside Out," where memories play a crucial role in shaping Riley's personality and emotional responses, "Eternal Sunshine" challenges the notion that erasing painful moments could lead to a happier life. Instead, it underscores the importance of every experience's importance in shaping our complete being and our ability to face life with authenticity and resilience.
  • Eat, Pray, Love: In this story of self-discovery, Elizabeth Gilbert, played by Julia Roberts, embarks on a journey that is both external and internal. Following a painful divorce, Elizabeth seeks to find balance and rediscover her true passion and happiness. Through her experiences in Italy, India, and Bali, she learns to connect with simple yet essential aspects of life, like the joy of eating in Italy, spirituality in India, and, ultimately, balance and peace in Bali. Each stage reflects the different emotions explored in "Inside Out" and how confronting and accepting these emotions can lead to greater understanding and internal harmony.

Both films complement the themes of "Inside Out" by exploring the importance of embracing all our emotions and experiences as fundamental to our growth and well-being. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" shows that suppressing parts of our lives can lead to more harm than good. At the same time, "Eat, Pray, Love" celebrates the journey of self-acceptance and discovering true happiness by integrating all facets of our emotions.

"Inside Out" provides a map of our emotions and invites us to reflect on how these emotions interact in our daily lives. It teaches us that all our emotions, even those considered negative, have a purpose and are essential for our emotional and psychological health.
