Moving old men.
Sometimes it is worth fighting for every second.

I wrote these lines for my 13 year old daughter Salwa who has been trying to break 3 minutes in the half mile for the last six months. She tried again yesterday and missed it by 2 seconds.
Lessons from athletics have a funny way of sneaking into real life.
I realized that the same words hold true for all the startups and young teams I have had the opportunity to work with over the last decade and a half.
Yes, really, you, all of you, do inspire and move me. Trust me that is an accomplishment.
Sometimes you have to fight for every single second.
Salwa beat her personal best by 2 full seconds in the 800m women open category yesterday on the tartan track at NCC. She picked up a bronze in the half mile and a silver in the 400m with a dip finish at the Athletics championship.
Medal or not it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you had the heart to go against the competition. That you competed against your personal limits, your own demons. That you stood up and opened that door in your mind and walked through it.
There is honor in sports (and life) only when we remember that in the end the track (and life) tests the spirit not the distance. Training and spirit always win against the odds.
To all the kids who left empty handed or with a broken heart yesterday. You showed up. You ran. You beat the #stopwatch. You won. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. If nothing else your spirit inspires me and every one around you.
There is not much that inspires old men these days. You do.
Stay with it. Sometimes it’s worth fighting for every second.
