ORGANIC BASICS

Organic Basics is a delightful Danish brand that specialises in ethical and sustainable basics such as winter accessories, ethical activewear, ethical underwear, tanks, and t-shirts.

Ethical and Sustainable Practices at Organic Basics

Materials:

The most common fabric used by OB is GOTS certified organic cotton, but a large portion of their collection also includes premium GRS-certified recycled nylon, recycled wool, or recycled cashmere (only used in their fair trade hats, ethical winter gloves, and sustainable scarves).

Labor practises and the supply chain:

All recycled fibres are sourced from Italy, and their factories are spread across Turkey, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.

Green business practises include:

Naadam’s goats are raised in the Gobi desert’s Bayangovi region, which is less prone to desertification. Of course, keeping their goats in an area the size of Manhattan also helps to reduce their impact.

They offset shipping emissions through the Carbon Fund as part of their goal to be carbon neutral by 2025 (among other goals detailed in their 2020 Sustainability Report).

They also use green energy powered facilities, water recycling closed-loop dyeing processes, FSC-certified recycled paper tags, and biodegradable (but not compostable – they’ll break down in a couple years) plastic mailers.

Community service and charitable giving:

Aside from using recycled textiles in their own products, they also donate any returned or imperfect products to Green Tree Textiles, a charitable organisation.

Aside from that, they work on a variety of fronts to improve the lives of Mongolian herding communities, such as those from which they source their cashmere.

This includes efforts to establish the Tsagan Yama Cooperative in order to provide more guarantees of fair wages, as well as donations to the Gobi Revival Fund, which aids in the protection of herding communities from various environmental disasters and urbanisation.
