Peru is a country of abundance. More than half its considerable land mass is covered in megadiverse Amazon rainforest, where scores of Indigenous communities with rich ecological knowledge have lived in harmony with nature for centuries. Peru’s fertile land produces great amounts of one of the world’s favorite beverages: coffee. In fact, Peru is the number one exporter of both organic coffee and organic cocoa worldwide.

The sad truth about some of world’s most commonly traded goods-coffee, chocolate, tea, bananas, palm oil, and timber products-is that their production often involves human rights abuses. Child labor, forced labor, poor working conditions, gender inequality, and the violation of Indigenous land rights are embedded in many of these supply chains for complex reasons of history, politics, and global economics.

Climate change is turning the lives of farmers upside down. Unpredictable weather patterns, shorter growing seasons, droughts, extreme temperatures, and increased exposure to pests and crop diseases pose daunting problems to smallholder farmers around the world-especially in the tropics, where people tend to be more reliant on natural resources. Climate-smart agriculture techniques can help farmers adapt to and prepare for impacts in order to preserve-and even improve-their livelihoods.

Forests are life. Source of air, water, food, shelter, medicine: they are critical to the survival of every living thing on Earth. From the the rainforests of the tropics to the snowy boreal forests circling the northern hemisphere, these ecological powerhouses support the livelihoods of 1.6 billion people and host 80 percent of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. Their ability to generate rainfall is vital for millions of farmers around the world-as well as global food security. And, as the fight to stave off climate change escalates, forests could be our most important natural climate solution.

More than 1.4 billion people around the world live in extreme poverty-the majority of them in rural areas. Improving sustainable livelihood opportunities for smallholder farmers and forest communities is the most effective way to lift rural people out of poverty-and nourish a global population expected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050. The cultivation of rural prosperity is core to our vision of a world where people and nature thrive in harmony, and it is embedded in our entire approach to sustainability transformation.
