Reflecting on a night of inspiration, empowerment, and community, the International Women’s Day Open Mic organized by Road to Rights in Colombo was a hope of light in the ongoing fight against gender-based violence. Held at One Galle Face, Colombo, on March 8th, 2024, this event united individuals from diverse backgrounds in a collective effort to foster change, understanding, and solidarity.

The evening was graced by the presence of renowned Sri Lankan actor Gevin Abhishek and acclaimed actress Umali Thilakarathna, both of whom lent their voices in support of gender equality, adding significant influence and encouragement to the proceedings. Their commitment to the cause served as a powerful reminder of the pivotal role public figures can play in advocating for social justice.

The event showcased a diverse array of talents, including speeches, musical performances, and poetry readings, all contributing to the overarching theme of the evening: the critical need for awareness, dialogue, and action on issues of gender-based violence, equality, and empowerment.

Participants such as Ravindu Nawanjana, CEO of Cutefella, delivered a poignant speech on children’s rights, while Sasanka Nanayakkara and Jeremy Reckerman moved the audience with their musical performances. Bella Bebop presented an original song that encapsulated the spirit of resilience and hope.

The Offstage Band — Sahein and Fabian, provided a musical backdrop that enriched the atmosphere, while speakers like Thihansa Sarathchandra and Pawara Rambukwella offered insightful speeches on gender-based violence in public spaces and policy reform, respectively. Dewni Weerasinghe and Johanne Kanagasundram touched hearts with their poetry, delving into the deep emotional aspects of the cause.

Further contributions came from Sandalu Weerasooriya, Yenuli Nelithma, and Amani Widanage, each offering their unique perspectives through song and speech. Archana Fernando, Deputy General Manager of Finance at MAS Holdings, Amna Naushad, and Rehansa Minsadi added depth to the discourse with their emphasis on breaking the silence and promoting gender equality.

The event was not merely a platform for performances; it was a forum for impactful discussions, as evidenced by the speeches of Vinuki Bandara, Sriparami Rajapaksha, and Pubudika Rasangi, each advocating for women’s empowerment and the importance of addressing domestic violence.

The night was not just a showcase of talent but also a moment of collective reflection and action, underscored by the supportive partnership of Yamaha. This collaboration highlighted the synergy between corporate support and grassroots activism, a vital component in the journey towards gender equality.

Looking back on this unforgettable evening, it is evident that the International Women’s Day Open Mic was more than just an event; it was a statement of solidarity, a call to action, and a testament to the power of community. The voices raised on that stage continue to echo, inspiring ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence and to build a more inclusive and equitable world. To all participants, supporters, and especially Yamaha for their partnership, a heartfelt thank you for being part of this essential conversation and for contributing to a future where rights and respect know no gender.
