Every morning you wake up, look at the list and start executing.

This is the most important part. I look at my list 4 to 5 times a day, sometimes more. Sounds really obvious but if you don’t “buy-in” to your preferred list system, you may as well not bother.

One other thing I would add to this is be flexible. Don’t have a rigid list system that forces you to do the most high priority work. Life simply does not work like that. Before I added flexibility there were too many times where I beat myself up over not completing a task, I quickly became demoralised and demotivated, blaming the list I was using and not how I was managing the actual tasks. I went through about a billion to-do apps before I realised that shifting tasks around, allowed me pick and choose tasks in real time that matched my flow state, location and mood. Again it sounds really obvious but the amount of tasks I get through now is a lot, lot higher. Of course there are always high priority tasks that you cannot put off but I find if I get a few quick wins, when my motivation to do tasks I’m dreading is low, it allows me build momentum to tackle the really taxing stuff…

The app I use is Things, it allows me to shift tasks around and even build what I call back-burner projects. It’s not cheap but it is rock solid — and no I don’t work for them and there is no affiliate link — Google it, Apple only though — sorry.
